I'm A Celeb: Campmates react to Matt Hancock entering the jungle

Kate Garraway, 55, has shared her thoughts on the former Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s debut on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! She was asked by her Good Morning Britain co-star, Susanna Reid, how she would have reacted to having been in the camp with the politician after Kate took part in the show back in 2019.

His role as healthy secretary seemingly touched a nerve with the star, whose husband Derek Draper, a former political adviser, became seriously ill with Covid-19 in March 2020.

He suffered lasting damage to his organs and now receives 24-hour care.

Speaking on Thursday’s episode of GMB, Kate explained she would try to “get to the bottom” of Matt's thought process.

She remarked: “I think instinctively, me personally, would want to talk to him and ask him questions about it and try to get to the bottom of how he thought about it.

“There’s a very visceral gut reaction to Matt Hancock as he’s there as a very famous face of the time that was miserable for the entire country and we’re still living with the consequences of.

“There will be people watching whose grief is still very, very raw from losing people.

“They won’t see that rawness of grief and sadness in the way that Matt Hancock is behaving on screen, because he’s laughing and having fun and trying to get to know a new group of people,” she added.

“I think if they don’t see that, they are going to not feel healed in any way. I kind of wonder if that’s what Matt Hancock’s motive might be – to show people he does care," Kate suggested.

“Not just heal his career, but heal a time people are still bleeding from.”

Matt entered the show on Wednesday alongside comedian Seann Walsh.

It has been alleged several of the contestants contemplated quitting the show when the politician entered the jungle.

Broadcaster Charlene White wondered why he had come on the show when the Government has been stable for no more than "five minutes”.

Meanwhile, radio host Chris Moyles said he had “taken a few weeks off his job”.

Boy George explained his mother nearly died from covid, suggesting he would have walked away from the show following Matt's arrival.

Corrie star Sue Cleaver added: “He sticks out like a sore thumb”.

Kate recently spoke last month about Derek’s condition on an episode of ITV’s DNA Journey.

She reflected: “2020 was a devastating year. With Derek, he got very sick very early on in the pandemic and has remained very damaged.

“That is quite well documented because for a lot of people, he's come to symbolise the fight that goes on.”

She explained how she had recently taken a few weeks off presenting GMB to focus on her husband’s health battle.

Kate went on: “I dramatically disappeared and haven’t been here for three weeks now…

“We were on air and Derek had come out of hospital, he’s been going in and out of hospital for a while looking at ways to tackle the damage caused by Covid back in 2020. But we haven’t really had any sort of medical eruptions, and then he just was really unwell.

She added: "So it was really dramatic; brilliant work by the A&E, absolutely extraordinary because when you’ve got sepsis, the big challenge is to find the source of infection quickly and get the right antibiotics and his blood pressure was so low."

I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! airs tonight on ITV at 9pm.
