Labour’s wasteful ways are no laughing matter

Ha ha ha. Very funny, Mr Byrne. The former Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liam Byrne left a note for his successor David Laws saying: “Dear Chief Secretary, I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards and good luck! Liam.”

He excused himself for this asinine folly by saying it was simply a private joke. But there is nothing amusing about rubbing the new Government’s nose in the predicament that Britain finds itself in after 13 years of ruinous Labour rule.

Liam Byrne is correct. There is no money because Gordon Brown squandered it. He allowed waste to become endemic while he oversaw the mushrooming of the benefits bill. He poured money into schools and the NHS but the British people received little in return while overpaid executives took the money and bonuses and ran.

Labour displayed a total contempt for the people it was meant to serve and this note from Liam Byrne illustrates that arrogant cynicism. As the new Government grapples with the colossal mess left behind let us all remember Mr Byrne’s sign-off and vow that Labour shall never, ever again hold office.
