No no-go areas for police

CHILDREN’S playgrounds after dark are often gathering points for youth gangs capable of shocking violence and are therefore given a wide berth by most people. For worried civilians to avoid such potential flashpoints is one thing but for trained police officers to do so quite another.

For a police chief to decree that a playground in his patch is a no-go area for officers on routine patrol after 8pm, as Inspector Andy Sullivan has done, is simply bizarre.

If the issue in Waterlees Park, Wisbech, is simply poor lighting then police officers will find torches solve the problem. If it is a basic unwillingness to confront yobs on the prowl, then a change of career would be a more appropriate solution.
