BIFTEK HILARITY
13.08.08, 6:40pm
"The whole point of going to an English farmhouse is that it is cozy. People want to get away from city life and modern living. They want a pleasant, down to earth British holiday experience."
--yes they do. and what they don't want is e-coli poisoning. not part exactly a relaxing holiday.
""Conformity stifles initiative and innovation. EU Directives are like handcuffs. They take us prisoner."
--getting people who prepare food to follow basic hygene standards is hardly 'conformity'. man, i don't think i want to have a meal at your place! after all, by the sounds of things, washing your hands after you've been to the gents will turn you into a german robot!
"British people have brains of their own."
which is why any restauranteur or B&B owner who objects to being told to get his dog out of the kitchen is a pretty brainless B&B owner.
a little anecdote (you righties like anecdotes).. i had occasion to have a meal in a pub in canterbury not long ago... nothing fancy, just a quick stop. they let dogs and cats run around the pub recently, and was a bit annoyed when i noticed them after ordering my food. while i was eating my (urp) lovely meal, what sight was i greeted with? the dog 'making his business' under the bar billiards table. accomanying smell etc.
now i like dogs. but was this sight and smell 'cozy'? no. was it hygenic? absoutely not.
do i hope that the guy who was responsible for preparing the meals was not also the guy responsible for cleaning up the dogs mess?
you bet!
pets and food preparation do not mix. and yes, if you are trying to suggest that basic standards of hygene are 'modern living', you may be correct.
but they are one of the aspects of 'modern living' that most sane people expect, even on a trip to the cotswolds.
you know, it actually beggars belief that you are even trying to argue this point, biftek. this is cheezy romanticism in the extreme. your first point about the bus drivers was bad enough... but this?
whew!

LFDM - FARMHOUSES
12.08.08, 10:53pm
The whole point of going to an English farmhouse is that it is cozy. People want to get away from city life and modern living. They want a pleasant, down to earth British holiday experience. Peeps are not looking for a sanitised EU version of an East German B&B. Most Brits are happy with thinjs the way we have been doing them. We don't need outside forces to tell us what to do. Conformity stifles initiative and innovation. EU Directives are like handcuffs. They take us prisoner.
We don't need them because British people have brains of their own.

COME ON!
12.08.08, 12:37pm
of course pets should not be in kitchens. they shed, and hair is full of bacteria (thats why human kitchen employees wear hairnets, after all).
i would assume that you think it is reasonable to demand kitchen employees to wear hairnets... so why would you be happy with dogs and cats running around unfettered in the same area?
do i want a cat hair doused in fecal matter to be sitting in my eggs? no!
once again, you take the completely reasonable, and try (unsuccessfully) to make it sound unreasonable.
if you seriously think that a b&b owner is going to shut down because thier dog is not allowed in the kitchen during the peparation of meals, then there is not much point in continuing this conversation, as that is a ridiculous suggestion.

FED UP WITH UNWANTED EUROPEAN DIRECTIVES PART 2
11.08.08, 8:36pm
Here is yet another example of bureaucratic, interfering H&S Directives imposed by the European Super State.
This unwanted H&S Directive became law in 2006 but we are only just suffering its crazy effects. It applies to all food preparation areas, regardless of size including privately owned farmhouse Bed and Breakfast accommodation, where guests stay in a British family home and enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast in the owner’s kitchen.
Owners are now facing inspectors enforcing this crazy Directive, which banishes cats, dogs and other household pets from the kitchens. No longer can hosts prepare a farmhouse fry-up for their guests while the family pet snoozes in a basket by the stove.
Sadly, many have given up and are thinking of closing their doors, seriously affecting the domestic holiday trade.
Just one more bit of unnecessary over-kill from an over-zealous, dictatorial Super State.

you completely miss the point of my last post. which demonstrated that the story you borought up to support your anti eu stance was, once agian, completely misrepresented. the eu never told anybody that they can't drive 30 miles, just that it was unsafe for a bus driver to drive more than 9 hours a day. which is completely resonable.
your last point, about britian being the only one having a problem fitting in with these new regs seems completely undable to deduce that, in fact it is a cheap anti-eu stunt story.
no bus company owner who understood the regulations and who had half a brain would seriously think that drivers would have to change every 30 miles. it is merely an exersize in being awkward. cheezy grandstanding because those bus companies would seem to have the desire to work their drivers more than nine hours a day, putting their customers, and the public, in jeopardy.
so, anyway, yet agian your 'anectodal evidence' is proven to be misrepresented and false.

LFDM - " THE UK WAS THE ONLY EU MEMBER STATE WHICH HAS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE DIRECTIVE"
11.08.08, 10:00am
Which only goes to show that rules designed for mainland Europen "states" are not always suitable for a sovereign nation like Great Britain.
In my opinion, Great Britain should be able to make H&S laws that suit its own traditional way of life and don't cause undue inconvenience or disruption to our established services.
That's why EU interference is bad for Britain, that's why we should leave the EU.

and that's with a labour communist government. I think bus drivers should work 24 hours a day and pay us for the privillege.
Who the hell is this E.U.? is that the place millions of us are emmigrating to? probably can't speak English and are homoe's no doubt. A **** disgrace. Where is captain Mannering when you need him.

ok, i have had a look. it is on the mail as well (no surprise there)
two points to make, one short, and one long:
1. the fact that you have to troll back all the way back to march to find some sort of silly 'eu farce' anecdote speaks volumes for right wing argumentation.
2. You completely twisted what the regulations were about (following the mail's rhetorical lead of course). but if you look at the bbc article it says that the directive is to prevent bus drivers from working more than nine hours a day, which is unsafe. the distance travelled is irrelevent.
and yes, i think it is perfectly reasonable for bus drivers to be limited to nine hours a day of work. fatigue is a major cause of accidents. pilots are limited in how much they can fly, so why not place a rule on bus drivers. 9 hours of driving actually seems pretty generous to me!
the evidence is as it says below:
"The companies are forcing clients to get on and off again. We don't decide how long a route has to be; we just want to be sure the average working time is nine hours a day," said the EU Transport Commissioner's spokesman, Michele Cercone.
He also claimed the UK was the only EU member state which has had problems with the directive.
Fatigue is the biggest cause of accidents and standards have been set to ensure that drivers are not tired, he added. "
--so there you go. once again, classic right wing 'anecdotal' argumentation and misrepresentation killed off with the actual reality of the situation.
ker-plunk!

i am intrrigued by your bus company example. do you mind telling me where you got that story from? can't seem to find it on the internet.
I imagine, like most right wing anecdotes, its misrepresented or taken out of context. but i'd like to see for myself.

WHO, THE BARMY BRIGADE?
05.08.08, 11:40am
We are repeatedly told that we have an ageing population, most of whom grew up doing hard work, now people will have to work into their seventies but will anyone be fit enough because all these 'elf and safety funny people' will turn them into compensation culture weaklings . The only people who will be fit enough and wealthy enough to enjoy old age will be lawyers, the Human Right ones, especially as employers daren't your expect anyone to do anything now, even take
your life in your hands by going out shopping just incase something like a hanging basket falls on your head with the many other daft taboos, even children are not allowed to be children anymore, you cannot really stay in bed all day either and be safe as we will be warned that the ceiling might cave in. ' Life gets tedious, don't it ' as the words of a song says and doesn't it just with the Barmy Brigade on the march

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO BRTAIN?
05.08.08, 7:10am
I read the papers every day and think, it has to change. But to my dismay it is getting worse. The PC brigade, Human Rights, and now the health and safety. What has happening to Briatian. Britain use to be so cultured and sensible, in most of its opinions and actions. Now they are the laughing stock of the whole world >Paper are getting E mails form all over the world, saying how sad it is to see the once greatest nation in the world reduce to a comedy show, full of do gooders and idiots politicians. My answer to the lefties, if their way is so good, why did Russia abandon it. Socialism does not work, and most people now realise this, except the glory hunters, who would put their opinions before the good of their country and fellow man.
