Stuart Conquest became this year's British Champion by winning a tense rapid playoff against Keith Arkell.

Both players finished on 8/11.  Stuart had already beaten Keith early in the tournament and faced a tougher field, so the victory was well deserved.  He will be a popular champion with fellow players and fans alike.

Nigel Davies, Stephen Gordon, Bogdan Lalic and Simon Williams shared third place with 7.5 points each.

Here is the crucial playoff game.  The Caro-Kann is a notoriously tough nut to crack, but Stuart made light work of it in this game.

Exchanging the c-pawn for the d-pawn gives Black a tiny structural edge - an extra centre pawn.  But it costs time, and 7.Be2!? is an interesting idea, anticipating the queen's switch to the kingside and fluid development.

TODAY'S fascinating hand came from the Bonn Nations Cup.

North-South were playing the popular opener of 2H to show a weak hand in hearts and a six-card suit, typically 5-9 points.

2NT is a relay asking partner to describe his hand in greater detail. There are several ways and conventions, which are played in this position.

The two most popular are “August” and feature showing. In feature showing you rebid your suit if you are minimum, but if you have extra values such as an Ace or a King you bid the suit showing that feature.

Our pair today were playing August. Here the choices of response were as follows: - 3C show a poor suit and a weak hand.

3D show a weak suit and maximum points.

3H show a good suit and minimum points.

3S show a good suit and maximum points.

3NT shows AKQxxx.

When South showed a good suit North had no problem in raising to 4H.

I'll admit there’s something compulsive about watching Anand win rapid tournaments.

Like watching the champion fighter, I know what the result will be, but I still want to see the gory details.

Against the toughest opposition in the world, only Anand makes the game look effortless.  Of course, rapid chess suits Vishy's style like a glove, combining as he does immense tactical skill with powerful pragmatism and intuition, speed of play and dangerous openings.

At the Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship held in Germany this month, Anand took the title for the ninth time in succession.

Magnus Carlsen was the challenger in the final, ahead of Alexander Morozevich and Judit Polgar, but the young Norwegian never had a chance.

In an earlier game, Morozevich was gunned down just a few moves out of theory with some beautiful tactics.

THE second Buffett Cup will take place in Louisville, Kentucky from the 15th-18th September.

It takes similar lines to the Ryder Cup of Golf and has twelve Europeans battling against twelve from the USA.

The Norwegians Boye Brogeland and Espen Lindqvist, members of the current European winning team, will represent Europe.

The other pairs are: - fellow Norwegians, Tor Helness and Jan Peter Svendsen, Father and Son Michel and Thomas Bessis of France, “Pepsi” Jarek Pszcola and Michal Kweicien (Poland) and Tom Hanlon and Hugh McGann (Ireland).

The sixth pair will be a new partnership of Sabine Auken (Germany and the young Dutch star, Marion Michielsen. Paul is the Captain.

Let us examine today’s hand. Many players would consider that the South hand has not got the values for an opening bid.

However the ability to introduce the heart suit into the auction favours an opening of 1H. After all if the opponents buy the contract the heart opener gives a good indication to partner when he selects his opening lead.

North responded 1S and South showed his second suit, ...

Former World Champion Jose Raul Capablanca is the one Cuban master whose name will be familiar to most players, but the young grandmaster Lenier Dominguez earned at least his fifteen minutes of fame by winning the Biel Grandmaster tournament this week.

The prodigious world number 6 Magnus Carlsen had been leading until he overpressed against Evgeny Alekseev in the seventh round, allowing Dominguez to sneak into the lead after notching up consecutive wins in rounds 6,7 and 8.

But the Cuban could manage only one draw in the final two rounds to tie for first place with Alekseev.  He then lost the rapid and blitz playoff to the Russian.

Currently world no. 25 Dominguez has a well rounded style, and in this game we see him ekeing out a narrow victory.  The end to this game really emphasizes the value of basic endgame proficiency, not to mention dogged persistence.  Rook and knight against rook should be drawn, but there are some winning chances and Dominguez had been shuffling around for thirty moves to reach the diagram position.

Now he saw an idea enabling him to close in.

BEIJING is the host for the Nations Bridge Championship, an event that used to be called the Olympiad.

Due to the fact that none of the English teams qualified in the European trials are now taking place to decide who will represent England.

The Open have a four-team match with the last four teams in last year’s trials. The Seniors have a straight challenge match in which the European team play against the Camrose trial’s winners.

The ladies also have a head-to-head match with a team of challengers. Undoubtedly the shortest of time is not ideal but there appeared to be little choice in the matter.

Surprisingly two pairs got to a slam on today’s cards in a recent team’s tournament. At the first table the QC was led.

Declarer won with the AC and went over to dummy with the KH. He now played a diamond to the JD. When this won he cashed the AS.

Next it was over to dummy with the AH. This was followed by the KS, South throwing his losing heart. Now a heart was ruffed establishing the suit.

The KD followed and another diamond to the AD drew the opponent’s trumps. Two winnin...

“100 Endgames You Must Know”, by Spanish grandmaster Jesus de la Villa would be a valuable addition to any developing player's library.

The introduction is not shy with a few home truths - endgames must be absorbed slowly and carefully and not all are exciting.

But for most players a little study of the endgame goes a long way to improving over the board results, particularly for players who habitually avoid them with excessively risky play in the middlegame.

This is a book of pure endgames, with a strong practical emphasis.  Rarely occurring endgames, or ones where practical wisdom is hard to distil, such as Q+P vs Q are ignored in favour of honest rook and pawn endings, by far the more relevant for practical play.  Here's a famous misplayed endgame which I was pleased to be reminded of.

Aged eight, I was amazed that king and pawn endings could be so deceptive, and the impression hasn't gone away.

IN Rubber Bridge conventions are not normally allowed as a defence to 1NT, but in Tournament Bridge there is a proliferation of them.

Probably the most popular is the Landy Convention, which is fairly simple to use. An overcall of 2C shows both majors and all other bids are natural.

The defence we prefer is called Asptro. An overcall of 2C shows hearts and another suit, while an overcall of 2D shows spades and another. This leaves 2H and 2S as natural bids.

The modern theory is that if you hold both majors you show the 4-card major first.

The responses are as follows:- pass shows a long suit in the minor bid and an unsuitable hand.

Next suit up:- denies 3 cards in the anchor suit and is not forcing, asking partner to show his other suit.

2NT:- a forcing bid asking partner to describe his hand further. Partner then shows his second suit.

Today’s hand, which came from the Shapiro Spring Foursomes, demonstrates the Asptro convention. Knowing that partner had spades, South correctly judged he was worth a 4S response.

Declarer won the...
