THE KREUTZER SONATA REVIEW AND TRAILERFriday March 12 2010 The Kreutzer Sonata reunites them on another low-budget, digitally shot, Tolstoy-inspired tale of emotional crisis. You have to admire their persistence as this is a turgid journey through the banalities of a failing Beverly Hills marriage, marginally enlivened by the haughty grandeur of Huston's central performance as an obsessively jealous husband. IT'S 10 years since director Bernard Rose and actor Danny Huston collaborated on ivansxtc. There's a flavour of a Forties Warner Brothers melodrama, as the film begins with Edgar (Huston) collapsing, his hand covered in blood as he wearily calls for an ambulance. A succession of flashbacks then charts his marriage to pianist Abby (Elisabeth Rohm) and his irrational suspicion of handsome violinist Aidan (Matthew Yang King) when he arrives to rehearse for a charity concert. It's all overwrought and unpersuasive. (Cert 18; 99mins) VERDICT 2/5
