THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO REVIEW AND TRAILER

Friday March 12 2010

IS there anyone who hasn't read the Stieg Larsson Millennium trilogy? They are the kind of page-turning treats that encourage you to lose track of time. Niels Arden Oplev's film of the first novel, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, is a faithful adaptation.

It compresses the twisting, complex plot into a darkly compelling thriller in which all the elements have room to breathe and nothing feels rushed or oversimplified.

It also respects the complexity of the lead characters, most notably pierced, punky computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (a suitably intense Noomi Rapace). Michael Nyqvist plays Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist hired by reclusive businessman Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) to solve the mystery of his teenage niece who disappeared in 1966.

The investigation sees Blomkvist join forces with Salander before turning into a satisfying, violent whodunit, underscored by a sense of a society corrupted by the evil that men do.

(Cert 18; 150mins)

VERDICT 5/5
