CLAIRE'S CLOTHES CLINIC
Michael Kors' spectacle chic Thursday November 6,2008 Daily Express fashion expert Claire Brayford offers smart advice on all your style dilemmas
[> Q
MY MOTHER-IN-LAW wants to give me some of the jewellery that she has been left
by her mother-in-law. Some of it is quite old-fashioned but she wants me to
wear and enjoy it – do you have any suggestions? Clare,

HAVE you thought about
getting the pieces redesigned? [> Quite a few top jewellery designers are now
offering customers the opportunity to transform tired jewels into something
irresistible. [> It’s a tempting proposition, particularly as you can end up with
a designer piece for a fraction of the price. London jeweller Robinson Pelham (020 7828 3492), which specialises in bespoke commissions, launched
its New From Old service this year and is doing a roaring trade. Perhaps it’s
because in the current climate it doesn’t feel like you are splurging on something new but
exercising a little make do and mend mentality.[> You can transform a
piece from just £200 and when you consider that many of Pelham’s own designs
start at £925 and factor in that you are getting something unique, that is
quite a saving. If you are inheriting costume
jewellery I would recommend you try Black Pearl’s Discarded Jewels service.
They will take all manner of pieces – from a broken watch or locket or even a
tiny perfume bottle – and transform them into a fabulous vintage-inspired necklace
or bracelet. Prices start from £50, so certainly worth raiding the attic for (www.blackpearlboutique.co.uk). QI
HAVE been told that I have to wear glasses for the first time but I have no
idea what style to go for. I want to look cool and up-to-date but I also want them
to flatter my face, please help. Stacey,
19, Nottingham AGEEK-CHIC glasses were such a trend on the
autumn/winter catwalks that the fashion pack are wearing them even if they have
20:20 vision. [> At the Michael Kors show, retro Clark Gable rimmed spectacles
never looked so sexy and with stars such as Sharon Stone and Kirsten Dunst also
championing the look, it is no wonder there is such a demand. There are a few
rules to follow on face shape. [> Gail Steele, founder of Auerbach & Steele,
says: “If your face is round or heart-shaped, look for an elongated frame to
balance the face, if your face is slim, go for something oval. Alternatively if
it is round, go for upswept almond shapes while square faces should avoid
anything too angular. Make sure the top of the frame mirrors the shape of the
eyebrows. "As for colours – black
and tortoiseshell are great for a strong retro look, while colour is softer and clear acetate can look
funky in a heavy frame.” [> Try www.auerbach-steele.com[> ● E-mail
