Gardens are not only blooming with flowers but also the unwelcome return of weeds at this time of year. However, a thrifty 65p concoction promises to eradicate these garden invaders once and for all - and it's likely sitting in your kitchen right now.

The secret weapon, revealed by Dr. Janine Bowring, is nothing more than a simple mixture of one part salt to two parts water. This solution can be applied to the crevices of patios or driveways to kill weeds.

In her TikTok video (@j9naturally), Dr. Bowring advises: "Kill weeds fast with this... Here's an easy natural hack that we learned from a friend of ours. And that is to put pool salt on those cracks where you're seeing those weeds, which again is completely natural."

"It's not going to be harmful to your pets or to yourself as humans. You're going to put a little bit of water just to moisten it a little bit and watch it do its magic."

"It's going to kill those weeds then they're easier to pull out or, you can use a power washer to remove those weeds. Always avoiding as many of the toxins as we can in our environment and in our homes because that toxic load is making us sick."

Dr Bowring suggests pool salt for this purpose, but assures that ordinary table salt is equally effective, with the primary distinction being the size of the granules.

Salt can be used as a cheap and effective way of removing weeds, particularly those growing between gaps in garden paving.

A gardening expert, Harry Bodell, explained how salt dehydrates the weed by preventing it from absorbing nutrients: "This method works by ultimately dehydrating weeds. Salt interferes with the weed's ability to absorb essential nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. The disruption in nutrient uptake weakens the plant's overall health, causing it to dry out from dehydration and die."

He recommends applying the salt to gaps between paving slabs on a dry day to prevent it being washed away by rain or humidity.

"Overnight, the solution will work on drying out the plant to the root, making the weed easy to remove the next day."

However, he does caution that using salt can also harm other plants and wildlife, so suggests digging them up by hand as an alternative.

Kendall Marie Platt, another gardening expert, agrees: "Salt can be used to kill weeds but it damages the soil so badly that nothing else will grow not even plants you want to grow there. It's much better to dig up weeds by hand."
