Study suggests nuts can help you live LONGER

How to live longer is a question many people ask themselves, but how is it best achieved? Trials have shown people who begin their day with a substantial meal are more likely to be a healthy weight and have better blood sugar levels. These both contribute to long life. Dietician Juliette Kellow and medical consultant Dr Sarah Brewer recommend five different foods to start your day off with, all proven to contribute to lengthy life expectancy.

Eggs

In their book, ‘Eat Better Live Longer’ they write: “These powerhouses are packed with nutrients linked to good health and the prevention of many age-related disease.

“Their positive effects on weight loss, memory, and eye and bone health mean that eggs are a great protein food to put on your menu.”

Eating around six eggs a week is the recommendation, whether it’s hen eggs, quail eggs or duck eggs.

Bananas

Whether slightly green or freckly, bananas come with triple levels of mood-boosting powers, according to the two experts.

They add: “They are good sources of carbohydrates (fuel for the brain and muscles), and of tryptophan and vitamin B6 (both of which are needed for production of feel-good chemicals).

“What’s more, bananas improve digestion and may help regulate blood pressure.”

You should enjoy three to four bananas a week.

Berries

The duo say: “All berries are good for you - the vibrant blues, purples, and reds of this supergroup are an indication that they are packed with damage-fighting antioxidants.

“But not all berries are created equal - some are better than others when it comes to longevity.”

Th best berries are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries, and you should eat a couple of handfuls three to four times a week.

Yoghurt

“Packed with gut-friendly probiotics as well as protein, calcium, and phosphorus, yoghurt’s longevity benefits lie in its protective powers, according to the pair.

They cite: “Studies have shown that yoghurt can help counter many of the health problems associated with getting older, such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and unwanted weight gain.”

Studies suggest one small pot a day offer the greatest health benefits.

Wholegrains

Wholegrain are true all-rounders when it comes to their health benefits, say the ladies.

They have positive effect on the circulatory, digestive, and immune systems and reducing age-related diseases.

“Switching from refined grains to wholegrain is a simple but powerful step to better health and a longer life,” they said.

Wholegrains are vital to the body so should be eaten every day.

You should aim to eat three servings a day, for example one medium slice of wholegrain bread, one small wholewheat tortilla, two oatcakes, three tablespoons of wholegrain breakfast cereal, and two heaps tablespoons of cooked brown or wild rice.

Nuts have also been found to hold a host of health benefits and to improve life expectancy, loaded with minerals, phytochemical, and essential fats.
