A new Chrome extension promises to speed up your computer – by freezing any unused tabs in your browser.

Keeping a selection of tabs open in your internet browser can really bog down your computer's performance.

Unused Chrome tabs are often quietly slogging away in the background – sipping at memory and slowing down the whole PC.

But a new – and free – Chrome browser extension dubbed Great Suspender hopes to solve the issue.

The lightweight plug-in freezes tabs when you are not actively using them.

This prevents the tabs from chugging away at your computer performance behind-the-scenes and reduces the browser's memory footprint.

Great Suspender offers users a surprising amount of customisability.

Tabs can be set to auto-suspend after a certain amount of time.

Some websites can be highlighted on a WhiteList so they avoid suspension from the plug-in, which means the Live Blog you are constantly checking will be exempt from the performance enhancing extension.

Suspended tabs are retained after closing and reopening browser – preventing dozens of tabs from all reloading after a restart.

Tabs will retain their favicon and title text, even when they are unloaded by the Great Suspender.

And should you need to resume using a suspended tab, it can quickly be restored by clicking anywhere on the webpage.
