Asking Apple's voice-assistant Siri about the terrorist attacks in New York City back in 2001 can quickly end with a call from the cops.

It appears that Siri mistakingly believes "9/11" is a mispronunciation of 911 – or "nine one, one" – the emergency services number in the United States and Canada.

Talking to Siri on an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch about the al-Qaeda attacks launches a call to the US or Canadian emergency services.

When you say 9/11 to Siri, her response is hilarious

An alarming prank has been sweeping the web this week – trying to trick people into making the emergency phone call.

"When you say 9/11 to Siri, her response is hilarious," one message read.

Or another: "Say 9/11 into Siri and you'll be amazed."

Police in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada reported hundreds of dud 911 calls last weekend alone.

One of the issues being face by police is whenever you place a 911 call, the emergency services' protocol mean they always have to get back in touch – especially if you hang up the phone during the call.

This is placing a huge strain on services and means life-saving calls may not get through.

The Canadian cops issued a statement, saying: "We are fortunate, so far, that there haven’t been real 911 emergencies where help has been delayed.

"Please, choose to be a good citizen and DON’T ask Siri about 9/11."
