Facebook to roll-out paid subscriptions on iPhone next month
FACEBOOK wants to bring paid subscriptions to its iOS app, a new report has revealed.
Facebook has reached an agreement with Apple and will roll-out paid subscriptions next month
Facebook wants to bring paid subscriptions to its hugely-successful social network, according to report from technology blog Recode.
The update would enable publishers who share articles via Facebook to protect their content behind a paywall.
The feature is already available on Android phones and tablets, but will now be available on iOS following an agreement with Apple.
“It’s resolved,” Facebook executive Campbell Brown told Recode.
Unfortunately, Brown didn’t elaborate on how the deal was cut with Apple, but did confirm the feature would be rolling-out March 1st 2018.
Publishers had asked Facebook to lower the number of free articles which can be viewed before being sent to the publisher’s website be lowered to five.
Apple currently charges a 30 per cent fee on any subscriptions sold within iOS apps.
Creepy experiment claims Facebook listens to your conversations
To compensate for this cut, some companies choose to hike-up the price of the subscription, while others flat out do not offer a subscription option via iOS.
Facebook does not currently take any money from the subscriptions it sells to publishers.
When a Facebook user hits a paywall, they are simply redirected to the publishers website to sign-up.
