AUDI RS6 IS SPORTY...BUT NOT THIRSTY

Story Image

The Audi RS6

Saturday August 16,2008

By Nat Barnes

LET'S talk about the number six – or, more precisely, the new Audi RS6. After the huge success of its supercar-eating RS6 Avant estate earlier this year, Audi has now followed it up with the introduction of this four-door saloon version.

Spearheading the forthcoming revised A6 range, the £76,160 RS6 saloon is powered by the same 580bhp 5.0-litre V10 engine as the Avant, driving it from 0 to 60mph in just 4.5 seconds and on to a 175mph top speed.

Despite the supercar performance though, incredibly the RS6 saloon doesn’t have a supercar thirst, with an average of 20.3mpg fuel economy – not bad when you consider such great performance.

Less headline-grabbing, although certainly more affordable than the scorching RS6, is the rest of the A6 range. The highlight of the remaining engine choices will undoubtedly be the 136bhp 2.0TDIe model, using a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine but capable of 53.3mpg fuel economy and just 139g/km emissions.

Although the styling revisions of the mid-range Audi are relatively minor, all models with the sporty S-line body kit will get the now famous Audi signature LED daytime running lights around the headlights. Since first introduced on the R8 supercar, their popularity has encouraged Audi to fit them on to more of its models, such as the A5 and TT.

Inside, a revised interior includes an updated satnav system, a stereo with a 40GB hard drive for storing music – or up to 2,000 addresses – and the availability of a new blind-spot warning system.

Prices for the A6 range will start from £24,800 when the model arrives in showrooms in October, although first deliveries of the RS6 saloon won’t start until a month later – perfect timing for an early Christmas present.
