Conservative PM Harold Macmillan and chief negotiator Edward Heath were both in favour of closer economic ties with Europe as Britain reassessed its international position in the post-war era. But it would be another decade before the UK joined the European Economic Community.

70 years ago (1953)

Nikita Khrushchev was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party in the USSR after a power struggle following Joseph Stalin’s death the previous March.

Three years after winning power Khrushchev denounced his predecessor’s brutal purges.


30 years ago (1993)

Israel’s PM Yitzhak Rabin shook hands with Palestine Liberation Organisation leader Yasser Arafat on the White House lawn after signing the Oslo Accords.

The treaty gave Palestine limited autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza but had minimal impact on peace in the region.
