Our new direction, by Cameron

DAVID Cameron launched a beefed-up version of his "mission statement" yesterday after loyal Tories raised concerns about a lack of detailed policy.

The Tory leader said his new version of the document Built to Last would allow the party to set a "new direction" for Britain.

He insisted it presented "quite a change" from the initial draft, criticised during a consultation with the Tory rank and file. The 12-page mini-manifesto contains almost 60 statements on issues ranging from ID cards to malaria in the Third World.

"The country needs a new direction and new answers," Mr Cameron adds in the document. "This country needs a responsibility revolution."

Almost all the ideas in the document have been aired before. They include a promise to replace the Human Rights Act with a Bill of Rights.

Also featured is a promise to resist re-introduction of any European Constitution that would lead to the creation of a European superstate.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott commented: "This is another triumph of style over substance."
