Life is a piece of cake for residents of a street in Nottinghamshire who claim the air often smells like baked goods. Families living next to the Northern Road Industrial Estate, in Newark, Notts, said their environment smells edible because of the Bakkavor Deserts factory. The industrial site is home to dozens of large businesses and factories, as well as many nearby homes scattered in and around the estate.

Self-employed, Susan Hobson, 51, told Nottinghamshire Live she loves living on the estate and that it's quieter than where she has previously lived.

She said: "When we sit out the back you can often smell donuts from the cake factory.

"I've never had a problem with it. Some mornings it smells like donuts.

Retired, Derrick Patter, 68, has lived in his home near the estate for more than 20 years. When asked if he could smell sugary treats in the air, he said: "It's not a bad smell, it's a nice smell. Only next door makes a better smell when she cooks her cakes."

Production supervisor, Lee Frost, 48, can also smell cake from his home. He said: "The smell doesn't bother me, it's cake so it's not a bad smell.”

On Bakkavor Deserts website the company said the firm started in Iceland in the 80s before moving to the UK in the 2000s.

On Bakkavor Deserts website the company said the firm started in Iceland in the 80s before moving to the UK in the 2000s.

The firm describes itself as “the leading provider of fresh prepared food in the UK” and states that it supplies the UK’s leading grocery retailers “meals, desserts, pizza and bread and salads.”

In a survey of favourite smells in 2015 the Daily Mail reported freshly baked bread came out on top with cut grass coming third. Cakes straight out of the oven came fifth.

Historians believe baking cakes first emerged in Egyptian times and there is also a record of baking in Greek and Roman times. Cakes as we would recognise them today first arrived in the UK in medieval times.
