Why we make such a row about neighbours’ mowers

NEIGHBOURS who start up their lawn mowers or hedge trimmers early on Sundays or Bank Holidays are a pet hate for most of us.

A study has revealed that eight out of 10 people think 9.25am is the earliest anyone should be at work in the garden. One in 10 do not even think it is acceptable to make a noise outside before 11am.

A similar number have been so incensed after being woken by neighbours cutting hedges or mowing lawns that they have confronted them while still in their pyjamas.

It also emerged that 11 per cent of us have got our own back by starting up our mower or sent our children into the garden to play before 9am.

Andrew Whitehead, garden power buyer for DIY chain B&Q, which carried out the survey of 3,000 people, said: “It is reasonable to expect neighbours to keep the noise down early in the morning.

“If in doubt, we’d caution people to spend time on quieter tasks such as weeding and planting out.”

The top 10 most annoying things about neighbours also include drilling and hammering, lighting bonfires and singing at the top of their voices.
