A study of 192 students showed those who talked with work or classmates scored higher in “executive function” – the brain’s ability to shut out distractions so it can focus.

But it only works if the chat is nice. Psychologist Oscar Ybarra, of Michigan university, US, said: “We believe performance is boosted because interactions induce people to try and read others’ minds and take their perspective on things.”
