Cricketer Tom Maynard’s family is left ‘devastated’
THE heartbroken family of Tom Maynard spoke last night of their “devastating” loss after the talented cricketer was killed by a train.
The 23-year-old Surrey county batsman was hit by a Tube train after apparently giving the slip to police who had pulled over his Mercedes.
His ex-England and Glamorgan cricketer father Matthew, 45, teacher mother Sue, 51, and sister Ceri, 19, said in a statement: “The Maynard family would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support following Tom’s tragic death.
“As you can appreciate, the news has come as a devastating blow and although the family is grateful for all the kind messages of sympathy, we would ask that we can be left to grieve in private at this very difficult and sad time for us.”
Tom was said to be on his way to see his girlfriend, model Carly Baker, 30, of Wimbledon, when stopped for erratic driving on Monday.

The cricketer, tipped as a future England star, was found on the track near Wimbledon Park station less than an hour later.
Miss Baker said on Twitter: “My beautiful boyfriend Tom Maynard. You’re the most special man I have ever met. You made me the happiest girl. I love you always X.”
Tom’s death had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, but the watchdog found insufficient reason to investigate due to lack of contact between officers and Tom.
British Transport Police said: “The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
