A man was brutally  in the stomach with an ice pick in an unprovoked attack on a Brooklyn subway platform.

The savage attack happened in the early hours of Friday morning, Brooklyn police revealed.

The 38-year-old victim, was waiting for the Manhattan-bound J train, when he was "aggressively approached" by the ice pick-wielding madman, according to the NYPD.

It happened at 4:15am on April 19, at the Crescent St station in East New York.

The attacker raised the ice pick and struck the unsuspecting passenger - without saying a word, police say.

Another traveller - a 43-year-old man, was standing next to the victim at the time but he managed to get away unscathed.

After the horrific stabbing, the suspect then followed both men on the train before escaping.

The NYPD has since released a grainy photo of the suspected ice pick stabber.

Following the attack, the wounded victim travelled to a nearby medical centre on his own.

The 38-year-old man arrived at the Interfaith Medical Centre, where he was admitted in stable condition with a stab wound to his stomach.

Police are continuing to search for the suspect and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

It comes after an 18-year-old was stabbed to death on a Brooklyn subway earlier this month.

Police say Isiah Collazo from Staten Island was on the train, on April 6, when he and his group of friends got into a dispute with another man on the train.

As the train started moving north out of the station, Collazo was stabbed and the train's emergency brakes were activated.

Video surveillance recovered by NYPD shows Collazo's four friends dragging him off of the subway train onto the platform, the friends appear to check themselves for injuries and runoff.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital but died just four hours later.
