UK weather: October to be WETTEST on record? Britain to be LASHED by more rain this month

THE UK has been battered by Storm Callum this weekend, with most areas seeing heavy downpours. So will this October be the wettest on record?

UK Weather: More heavy rain for central and southern England

pounded Wales, Northern England and Scotland on Friday and Saturday, claiming three lives.

Rivers burst their banks, whole towns were flooded and power was knocked out to hundreds of homes.

It’s cleared off now, but the remnants have brought a rainy Sunday to the southeast.

And looking into the rest of October, it seems that the unseasonably high temperatures we’ve been seeing could usher in a very rainy month.

Firstly, this week will see a lot of drizzle.

According to the , Monday will start rather cloudy in the south and southeast with spells of rain or drizzle.

The northwest after a chilly start but will be mostly dry with sunny spells.

The far northwest will see some scattered showers.

From Tuesday to Thursday, many areas will see a murky start.

Things will become brighter, but the rain returns as the week rolls on.

Wednesday, in particular, will see blustery showers in the northwest.

Friday should start with a fine spell of weather with sunny spells, once early mist and fog across southern and central parts has cleared.

Cloud and a weakening band of rain in the northwest will make progress southeastwards on Friday, reaching most parts of the country by day's end.

Strong winds and showers should follow in the far northwest for a time as the month turns more wintery.

From next weekend onwards it will be changeable with periods of wet and windy weather interspersed with brighter and showery spells.

The heaviest rain is likely in the north and west, where there's a risk of gales.

Drier, brighter in the southeast, although some wet and windy spells likely here too.

Temperatures will be around the average, but becoming rather cold later with an increasing risk of overnight frosts.

By the end of October and into early November weather systems may become slow-moving at times.

This will lead to the risk of longer unsettled spells and, conversely, the chance of longer settled spells, said the Met Office.

Western and northwestern areas will probably see the wettest and windiest conditions, with the south and east often drier and brighter, although still with some rain at times too.

During any generally settled and drier spells of weather, there is an increasing risk of overnight frost and fog, especially in the north of the UK.

On the whole, temperatures are likely to be rather cold overall as we head into the festive season.
