Brazil: Man fires flames towards women from a car window

Two teenagers have suffered severe burns after being by a man who was travelling in his car on the streets of Rio de Janeiro, . The victims were identified as Beatriz Vilella , 18, and her friend De Ella Gabrielle Victoria, members of the LGBT+ community, who were in the Bangu neighbourhood when they were viciously burned by a driver on Saturday night.

The terrible aggression was documented by a person who was travelling inside the vehicle and the victims have speculated that the attack was homophobic.

The recording shows that the driver of the vehicle slowed the car down so that the man sitting in the front passenger seat could light a lighter and throw an aerosol can on top of the women, who had been stopped by the pair.

In the video, the two teenagers’ hair could be seen catching alight as the car proceeded to speed away.

Although the two women were attacked, neither was seriously injured.

In an interview with local media, Beatriz Vilella said that her hair was burned but her body was not affected by the fire.

She said: “It burned me a little, but it's okay. My hair is horrible; It burned all my hair.”

Gabrielle Victoria explained that the fire spread to her head and burned one of her braids, which she had to cut due to the poor condition of her hair.

During her statement to the media, the woman revealed that the attackers came back to look for them to ask them not to discuss what happened with anyone and to stay away from the press.

“They came back wanting to talk (and asked me) to get in the car and they offered me to shut up , not to say anything or we would go out (to the media) saying all that,” Victoria said in a press interview.

The woman added that she and her friend decided to tell her story to prevent other women suffering the same fate and for the attackers to be arrested, since they remain fugitives.

Beatriz Vilella and Gabrielle Victoria detailed that, last Saturday night, the two were sitting at a bus stop when they saw the suspects come to a complete stop before the attack.

The young women realised that the driver and another person were travelling in the vehicle, who lowered the windows and began to insult them, for no apparent reason.

The women commented that the attack could be related to the fact that they both belong to the LGBT+ community.
