William and his wife toured the Assyakirin Mosque in Kuala Lumpur, the biggest place of Muslim worship in Malaysia, in their stockinged feet.

Kate wore a custom headscarf matching her grey Beulah dress with sleeves and a hemline below the knee to comply with religious dress codes. She had kicked off her £185 nude LK Bennett heels before entering the building.

Diana wore very similar outfits on visits to mosques during trips to Egypt and Pakistan.

A senior royal aide confirmed: “This is the first time that the future head of the Church of England or his wife has visited a mosque. It’s their first visit to a predominantly Muslim country. They felt it was appropriate to come.”

The visit, which was not publicised in advance because of fears that large crowds would gather, came as anti-US protests spread across the Middle East over a film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

At the mosque, William was overheard asking “So is this where everyone gathers? When is your biggest service? How many people gather here?” When he was told there were up to 12,000 on Fridays, he exclaimed: “Wow. So many!”

Kate told Datin Faudziah Ibrahim, who is general manager at the mosque: “It’s so peaceful in here. It’s really amazing.”
