Nala must be feline fine about her new-found success as the cat has managed to capture the hearts of over a million avid Instagram followers over the globe.

The once-abandoned, doe-eyed puss is now thought to be the web's most famous puss.

Lounging on her back, modelling bow-ties and designer sunglasses – the feline fashionista uses her pussycat popularity to push t-shirts, phone cases, in-app instant-messager purchases and important messages to raise awareness for animal welfare.

While her current owner has nourished, grown and financed her every-expanding viral appeal, Nala's previous family abandoned the adorable kitty at just four-months-old when they could no longer afford to keep her.

When current owner Varisiri Mathachittiphan - nicknamed Pookie – discovered Nala she was a shivering, frail cat in the rescue shelter suffering with a breathing problem.

She had been sent there along with her siblings but was the only one left by the time 27-year-old Pookie from Los Angeles visited – and promptly fell in love.

She said: "Even though I never really intended to adopt a kitten that day, when I saw her, I just knew it was meant to be.

"After she was given love and attention, and of course some medicine, Nala was back to 100%, and has grown up healthy and big.

"Nala is like a lot of cats - curious and playful, but she is different in her own way.

"I started Nala's Instagram account two years ago to share her with my friends, but I had no idea that it would come this far.

When asked about the origin of Nala's apparently insatiable online appeal, owner Pookie shrugs: "I'm not sure if it's because she's cute, or if it's because of her background, but I like to believe that Nala is an underdog".
