HEALTH BOSSES DON'T MERIT INFLATION-BUSTING PAY RISE

Friday November 14,2008

BRITAIN cannot afford its public sector as presently constituted and rewarded.

Taxpayers are suffering grievously. Hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs in recent months. Millions have suffered sharp drops in living standards. Millions more have seen their pensions entitlements dwindle.

But the merry-go-round of profligacy in the state sector keeps turning.

News that bosses at the department of health have received salary increases far ahead of inflation is another slap in the face for hard-pressed families.

And, of course, these latest pay rises will feed through into even higher salary pension entitlements for the fat cats of the NHS administration.

NHS chief executive David Nicholson already earned more than the Prime Minister before pocketing his latest bumper rise.

There is no justification for granting him a pay increase at all. In the current jobs market the same is true all across Whitehall.

If people wish to depart plum jobs in protest at a pay freeze then they should be allowed to – there would be scores of highly qualified candidates ready to take their place.

Better still their workload could be shared around many remaining colleagues, boosting productivity. Economic reality has yet to bite in the public sector.
