Charles may never be crowned King

JUDY SAYS: Prince Charles was 60 yesterday – and he’s as far from ascending the throne as ever.

As the Queen looks like marching on into three figures, her first-born may never be crowned King.

But he can be proud of his record as Prince of Wales. There can be none bearing that title who has done so much good in such an unassuming way.

TURNING 60 IS A PIECE OF CAKE FOR CHARLES...

The Prince’s Trust is one of the greatest successes in modern public life and has been the salvation and inspiration for countless young people.

Meanwhile its chief patron is inextricably linked with 20 separate charities, and maintains a quiet faith. He reportedly sinks to his knees every night to say his private prayers.

Charles has been a good father, too. He is the product of a famously dysfunctional family, yet he has managed to raise two confident, happy boys, despite the death of their mother in the worst of circumstances.

It can’t have been easy for Charles but he seems to have helped navigate his sons safely through the shoals of adolescence and beyond.

We read that he experiences black moods when an inner voice proclaims: “The Queen is dead, long live the King” – referring not to Charles III but William V.

I find this difficult to credit. Charles is, as I say, a good father and there have never been any substantiated reports of a paternal-filial rift over the accession.

So happy birthday, Charles. You are a good man who has tried your best for family and country, and will continue to do so. Perhaps you will never be King. If so, you’ll be the best King this country never had.
