EXPRESS DELIVERY: AVRAM GRANT WOULD LOVE TO MANAGE NEWCASTLE

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant

Sunday November 16,2008

By John Richardson

AVRAM GRANT has made it known that he’d love to manage Newcastle.

The former Chelsea boss is in negotiations to coach Croatian side Hajduk Split but recent contact has been made with the Geordie club’s owner Mike Ashley.

Grant’s heart still lies in the Premier League and if Ashley fails to sell the club the Israeli has told him that he is the man to take control in the dressing room – something interim boss Joe Kinnear is blissfully unaware of.

Rangers boss Walter Smith wants his pal Sir Alex Ferguson to do him a huge favour – by sending emerging central defender Jonny Evans on loan to Ibrox.

It might be pushing friendship too far because Ferguson believes Evans has a part to play in Manchester United’s plans this season.

Evans is putting pressure on regular central defensive partners Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and Fergie also knows that Sunderland boss Roy Keane is banging on the Old Trafford door desperate to sign the Northern Ireland international.

UEFA president Michel Platini is on the warpath again – this time he is determined to prevent the transfers of players under the age of 18.

He believes – and he has some support from within FA headquarters – that too many youngsters are being exploited and should remain at one club until they turn 18.

If the rule had been in operation Arsenal couldn’t have signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Theo Walcott from Southampton or Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff.

They don’t come much tougher than former Rangers and Newcastle United defender Craig Moore.

The Aussie played for his A-League side Queensland Roar against Melbourne Victory last weekend despite knowing he had cancer and was facing an operation to remove his left testicle a few days later.
