Fivers are in demand

A FIVER might not go very far these days.

DEMAND Five pound note DEMAND: Five pound note

But a campaign is under way to get more £5 notes in circulation after a surge in demand for them.

High street bank HSBC has started stocking the notes in 100 of its cash machines in the South-west and the Midlands.

An HSBC spokesman said: “It is a trial the Bank of England has been talking to us about to try to increase the number of £5 notes in circulation.”

There are currently around 260million £5 notes in circulation in the UK, compared with 630million £10 notes and more than 1.4billion £20 ones.

Because £5 notes are used more regularly, they have a much shorter lifespan,.

The average £5 note lasts for only one year before it becomes too damaged to be used.
