BUZZING INDUSTRY: Demand for tradespeople such as plumbers has never been higher

Tuesday September 11,2007

By Alison Coleman

With new buildings anddevelopments springing up all over the country, the demand for skilled and qualified tradespeople, including plumbers, electricians, plasterers and tilers, has never been higher.

Last year, around three-quarters of construction and building firms had problems recruiting staff, according to a Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) report, with demand predicted to increase further this year.

This is welcome news for anyone planning to retrain or switch to these potentially lucrative areas of trade. Tradeskills 4U is a leading provider of electrical, plastering, tiling and plumbing training, delivered at its brand new City & Guilds (C&G) Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)-approved training centre in Crawley, West Sussex.

Demand is high for electrical training, with courses ranging from a two-day
introductory foundation course through to Part P Domestic Electrical Installation.

Director Carl Bennett said: “Legislation introduced in 2005 means people must now be qualified to Part P level to carry out any electrical work. This includes kitchen fitters, plumbers and even gardeners.

“Our courses provide the full range of skills and qualifications needed.”

Tradeskills 4U also offers a 10-week intensive training course – the equivalent of one full academic year at a college – leading to C&G certification, for those looking for a career in electrics. For budding plumbers who want to avoid years of college study, the Building Trade Skills Centre (BTSC) can offer C&G plumber certification in a matter of months at its facilities in Chessington, south London.

BTSC training leads to the full C&G NVQ Level 3 Qualified Plumber certification, plus the BTSC’s Master Plumber certification, which includes ACS in gas that can lead to CORGI registration.

the reason there is a short fall of trades people in this field is because the work is priced to make you work at 110% then pay you half that .only fools and horses work.
