Salary in the UK is among the best in the world

Tuesday October 23,2007

By Alison Coleman

It’s official – the UK is the place to be if you want a well-paid career in information technology.

A survey by human resources consultancy Mercer ranked the UK as the fourth highest-paying country for IT managers.

Based on gross annual total cash, bosses in the UK earn an average of £62,180. Salaries are highest in Switzerland, where IT managers earn an average of £74,150. Denmark came second with £64,750 and Belgium third with £63,760.

The survey also highlighted the fact that the difference between salaries for junior staff and managers varies considerably around the world.

In the West, pay often increases more proportionately with experience, while in countries in the Far East, larger pay gaps exist between junior and senior positions.

Good pay and career development prospects have helped fuel growth in the IT training and recruitment market.

Coventry-based JBC Computer Training offers fast-track courses to equip people with the IT skills that employers are looking for, such as networking, Cisco routing, server administration and operating systems.

A company spokesman said: “Our full-time programmes are designed to intensively train candidates with little or no IT experience to a level where they can get an IT job.”

Those seeking more advanced IT training can pursue qualifications such as MCSA, MCSE and CCNA.

David Conroy, a principal with Mercer, said: “The globalisation of IT continues to develop, with companies becoming more imaginative in their remuneration strategies to ensure that they keep the best talent.”
