Best of British: People are flocking back to the seaside

Thursday July 24,2008

By Louise Barnett

Holidays in Britain are making a comeback as thousands of struggling families shun their usual expensive breaks abroad this summer.

The credit crunch and the pound’s nosedive against the euro are behind Britons’ renewed enthusiasm for holidays at home.

The trend is great news for UK resorts, with bookings already up by as much as 63 per cent in some seaside towns, while camp site and holiday park reservations have risen by 10 per cent.

Soaring fuel, energy, food and mortgage costs are putting a real squeeze on family finances this year, affecting many people’s summer holiday plans.

In addition, higher airline taxes and the weak pound have pushed up the cost of holidays on the continent, helping to make the traditional British break more attractive than ever.

Travel and holiday website lastminute.com said its UK bookings were up 16 per cent on last year, while its UK hotel-only reservations have surged by 40 per cent.

The website’s bookings for British seaside resorts were particularly strong, with those for Newquay in Cornwall more than double last year’s figure and Brighton up by 63 per cent.

The Camping and Caravanning Club, which represents 1,400 sites, said advance bookings were up 10 per cent on last summer.

A spokeswoman said: “A lot of people are saying that the credit crunch is really affecting things.”

Pontin’s Holiday Parks also  reported a 10 per cent increase in summer bookings compared with last year.

Tom Wright, chief executive of tourism body VisitBritain, said: “Economic factors coupled with renewed enthusiasm for what a holiday in Britain can offer present real potential for domestic tourism this summer.

“Our seaside resorts have undergone a renaissance, with options to suit every taste. Cities have regenerated and destinations and standards are improving.

“With this, and the potential for queues and longs waits at the airport, it is no wonder that Britons are avoiding the hassle and maximising their holiday time by staying at home this year.”

Martin Couchman, deputy chief executive of the British Hospitality Association which represents hotels, said: “Britons do seem in many cases to be choosing the UK whereas, perhaps, previously they wouldn’t have done.”

Even Gordon Brown is planning to enjoy the delights of the English seaside this summer with a holiday at Southwold in Suffolk.

The Prime Minister will hope this year’s break lasts longer than the ill-fated trip to Dorset he and his family “enjoyed’’ last July.

The PM was called back to London for a meeting about foot-and-mouth disease after four hours and never went back.

Yesterday, meanwhile, glorious sunshine and the start of the school holidays sent families flocking to beaches across the country.

Thousands of people flocked to Bournemouth to make the most of the warm weather. The resort’s 3,000 deck chairs and 1,000 sun loungers were all hired out within hours.

And in Weymouth, Dorset, traditional British beach pursuits like Punch and Judy and donkey rides were in full swing.

The warm temperatures are expected to continue until the weekend when unsettled and cooler weather is set to return.

Nothing BETTER than a "bucket n'spade hol" to remind the "people" how lucky they are!!! Fab. entertainment{CANON & BALL} or are they dead?? Donkey rides{KIds love that as they probably havent seen one before except on a laptop} and the wonders of Punch n'Judy shows, who are they and why are they belting each other{Brown & Harriet?} and of course the "loos" that are never cleaned and the queques for the "chippie" and "ice cream'.Yes it all brings back memories but to be honest I cant say I miss it when I could be in Hawaii?? In my dreams but nevertheless that is Paradise!!!

HOORAY FOR THE BRITISH HOLIDAY AS BOOKINGS SOAR

24.07.08, 12:13pm

More tax on flights under the guise on Carbon emissions compunded with all other tax add ons by this government is a deliberate long term plan to force the average person to stay at home and spend your hard earned in the UK. It going back to the old days when the working cl**** person was expected to stay at home and the middle to upper classes went away. Cl**** system at its best. Don't see many of the politicians going for a week to Blackpool or Skegness, if they are staying in the UK they are poncing a free holiday (Mr Darling!)

Positive thinking, look at the good that can come out of many, if not all situations that initially appear gloomy, or downright catostrophic to many of different persuasions /attitudes. At the same time look how the sad /catostrophic figures from the NHS highlight the digusting, the absolutely disgusting figures of 800,000 drink related problems treated in our hospitals ! How much did, or indeed does this cost me and my mother the taxpayer. Money, money, money, the prime consideration of all things ! The filthy., disgustingly fithy, sad, sad, fact that, suffering, dying, riddled with pain,/ desease, blindness whatever, the sad sad NHS has no money to buy drugs from the monolithic drug companies to treat deserving cases. They pander to wastrels, there are wastrels through and through. Demand, demand that government priorities / attitudes, 'allegiances even,' are changed.

BRITISH V FOREIGN HOLIDAYS

24.07.08, 9:04am

I love fish and chips but I restrict myself to only eating them at the seaside so I day trip 6 or 7 times a year!
I love our beaches and the rock pools where children are to be found with nets and crabs in
little buckets.
I am even happy with the shabbiness of some resorts and the grey seas that accompany frequently overcast skies.
But I am a traitor where hols are concerned !
I love to travel and apart from a week in Devon/Cornwall once a year I always go abroad.
But HURRAY for all those that have taken their hols in Britain. I hope the sun shines on everyone !
