20 people were injured during an opposition rally in Thailand

Thursday July 24,2008

The governor of a Thai province said hundreds of pro-government supporters have attacked an opposition rally, injuring at least 20 protesters including three seriously.

Gov. Supoj Laowansiri of northeastern Udon Thani province says about 600 supporters of the People's Power Party armed with axes and sticks attacked 100 members of the anti-government People Alliance for Democracy.

The People's Alliance for Democracy, which led months of demonstrations that brought about the ousting of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006, resumed its rallies in May. It wants to remove Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, alleging that he is little more than a proxy for Thaksin.
