STRACHAN WARNS FANS PARADE OF NEW SIGNINGS NOT IN THE HOOPS PIPELINE

Problems: Gabriel Tamas

Friday July 25,2008

By Gary Keown

Gordon Strachan broke his silence last night and told Celtic fans to forget about being given the parade of new signings they want.

The Parkhead manager has witnessed a £3.5million move for Auxerre’s Gabriel Tamas hit stony ground because of personal terms and seen wage demands damage other moves for the likes of Hamburg full-back Timothee Atouba.

Strachan also missed out on a loan deal for Roma defender Vitorino Gabriel Antunes, who went to Lecce, with the only new arrival being crocked Ex-Derry City winger Paddy McCourt.

Strachan insists McCourt “doesn’t count” because he’s been out with a hamstring injury since the first day of pre-season training.

And he has warned Bhoys fans they may have to put up with more being asked this term of young stars such as Paul Caddis, Paul McGowan and Cillian Sheridan.

Strachan, who has barely spoken publicly since the end of last term, said:

"We get thrown every Tom, Dick and Harry at us and it's not going to happen.

“We either get good players or we don't bother.

"If we don't get anyone, I'll just get on with it and work with the players we have.

“Caddy is there, Cillian is there and Gowser is there.

“Mark Wilson is coming back and will be like a new player while Georgios Samaras is now with us full-time.

“Supporters want to see players arriving, of course they do.

“It’s like kids when they went for sweeties years ago.

“One says: ‘I want sweeties’ and another says: ‘I want sweeties as well.'

“Everyone wants a new toy and we're trying our best to do it, but do we just say: ‘OK, here’s a player’ to keep supporters happy?

“Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get a couple of new players in, but if it can't work, it can't work.
