BOSS URGES FOREIGN STARS TO 'GET REAL' OVER OLD FIRM WAGES

By Gary Keown

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has urged greedy foreign stars to get real over the wages on offer in Scotland.

The Hoops gaffer has endured a frustrating summer of failing to do deals and has watched arch-rivals Rangers suffer similar problems.

The Parkhead outfit were close to snaring Romanian Gabriel Tamas until he turned down their £14,000-a-week offer while Rangers saw a move for Watford’s Nigerian stopper Danny Shittu fall apart over a wage bust-up.

Strachan believes the money madness that has infected English football has made the transfer market a minefield for the Old Firm.

However, he reckons footballers should realise what is on offer for them in a professional sense by moving to Glasgow.

Strachan said: “I think some players associate Celtic and Rangers with Manchester United and all these clubs.

“If everybody wants huge wages, they have to go to England.

“If they're not wanted there, they've got to go somewhere else and we can provide Champions League football, 60,000 people, decent wages and a chance to enhance your career.

“Listen, we're not all over the place, we only have three, four, five targets we've been working on.

“Transfers are hard work now, but there are certain clubs in England who have made it a mad world to deal in.

“You have to have common sense from everybody.”

Strachan’s side head north this morning for tomorrow’s friendly with FC Porto after playing Cardiff in the Algarve Cup last night.

The manager had hoped to study everyone in his squad, but injury problems have knocked those plans on the head.

Player of the Year Aiden McGeady is the latest star to land on the sidelines with a leg knock that will be monitored over the course of the weekend.

Mark Wilson is also being wrapped in cotton wool as he slowly works his way back to full fitness.

Shunsuke Nakamura will also travel to Germany for a hernia operation next Tuesday, but Strachan is sure he won’t be out for long.

Dutchman Evander Sno  and Kiwi Chris Killen have also gone to the Olympics.

Strachan said: “We’ve only got 15 players when I hoped we'd have 22 for the games."
