For cosmic detectives everywhere it is a unique opportunity.

The black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy is getting ready to feast, but not on anything that would appeal to an Earthling.

A gas cloud three times the size of our planet has strayed within the gravitational reach of our nearest supermassive black hole. So across the globe telescopes are being trained on the heart of the galaxy, some 27,000 light years away, in the hope of seeing this unique cosmic spectacle.
