Conor McGregor has claimed he would defeat Floyd Mayweather in a boxing bout if the two rivals returned to the ring for a rematch. The UFC icon fell to the American via TKO in the 10th round in their 2017 contest in Las Vegas, which was dubbed ‘The Money Fight’.

The Irish star has reportedly set his sights on a rematch with Mayweather though, and took to social media to reveal his confidence in victory should the fight go ahead. After Claressa Shields tagged Mayweather in a tweet comparing the two fighters and their styles, McGregor intervened.

“You’ve way more venom than Floyd,” McGregor wrote. “I beat Floyd if we rematch. Untold truth it was me who carried him the early rounds playing potty patty.

“Every single shot I threw early landed. From body to head I was playing ping pong. I come out full force, and today, I end Floyd.”

McGregor’s confidence seems rather unfounded considering he appeared visibly uncomfortable throughout the first bout with Mayweather. The UFC man claims he struck Mayweather a number of times when reality told a very different story before he ran out of gas and was ultimately dominated.

The Irishman made similar claims in the immediate aftermath of their fight, as he declared in the ring: "I punched you a lot in the early rounds. Your composure is great though, fair play to you. A little early, a little early.”

Mayweather reportedly made an offer of £131.5m to McGregor for a rematch, with the undefeated champion boxer said to be confident to come out on top as he is training well.

The fight could be contested in March 2023 in the Middle East, with a potential clash between the American’s protege Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia on the undercard.
