F1 commentator Martin Brundle is still baffled about the furore caused from his infamous US Grand Prix grid walk 12 months ago. In what proved an awkward few minutes of live TV in Austin, the former driver did his customary walk of the track just minutes before the official start, rubbing shoulders with a number of star-studded guests.

Brundle, 63, was snubbed by Serena Williams as the tennis legend walked past him without acknowledging his questions. He did however, find success with Rory McIlroy, who happily spoke at length to Sky Sports having been invited to the Circuit of Americas as a guest of Aston Martin.

Just moments prior to seeing Williams, Brundle had also tried to speak to award winning rapper Meghan Thee Stallion, approaching the 26-year-old and saying: “Megan, Martin Brundle from British television, how are you? Megan Thee Stallion, you’re a freestyle rapper.”

Brundle however, then opened up with a bizarre question: "You’re a freestyle rapper, have you got any rap for us today on Formula One?” The bemused musician laughed as she replied: “I have no rap today, I’m sorry.” When asked who she was supporting for the race, her bodyguard stepped in and ushered the commentator away.

The clip soon went viral on social media, with F1 fans on a number of platforms lauding the hillarity. But one year on Brundle, who drove for the likes of Williams, Benetton, McLaren and Jordan during a career that spanned over two decades, is still miffed by the coverage the incident received.

“It just amused me, really, that being ignored on the grid by Megan Thee Stallion—or her henchman, her bodyguard or whatever—or DJ Khaled, it just travels so much further than winning Le Mans or the Daytona 24 Hours," he told GQ. "Or maybe I've called some great races and some stuff I feel where I've really aced something in commentary, and it just doesn't matter. It doesn't count. I just find it quite bizarre. Hence I think I made that comment on Twitter that you saw.”

Indeed, just a day after his Austin debacle, Brundle took to social media to lament the star's bodyguards, posting: "I have felt under pressure on the grid before but by people called Senna, Prost, Schumacher, Mansell, Piquet and so on. Bodyguards visiting the grid for the first time don’t bother me, everyone’s got a job to do, but they could maybe learn some manners and respect on our patch."

Brundle also revealed that seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton now blanks him on grid walks, explaining: "Lewis used to talk to me a lot and then stopped. So we take it as it comes.”
