Lewis Hamilton may be the most dominant F1 driver in the history of the United States Grand Prix, but 2022 has proven to be a different story and Andrew Shovlin has raised a number of issues the Brit may come up against in this year's race. Nobody has won more United States Grands Prix than Hamilton, who has won it six times, but his last came way back in 2017.

Max Verstappen took the chequered flag last year and will once again be the favourite heading into the race next weekend. Mercedes are still looking for that elusive victory with Hamilton running out of time to maintain his impressive record of winning at least one race in every season he's been in F1.

The Silver Arrows are expected to bring new upgrades to the Circuit of the Americas, but trackside engineering director Shovlin has listed three main concerns they have heading into the next race. "It's a tricky circuit and it was a tricky circuit for us last year," Shovlin said on Mercedes' YouTube channel.

"It was very bumpy, there was a lot of overheating from the tyres and we weren't performing as well as Red Bull were on the softer tyres." Bumpy tracks this year have hampered Mercedes even more with the temperamental W13 needing a perfect setup to keep pace with the frontrunners.

That may not be as much of an issue this year with Shovlin pointing out the track has been resurfaced. But he admits the team won't know what to expect until they get out for FP1.

He added: "They've done some resurfacing so hopefully those issues with the bumps are a bit less. But what's very hard this year is to really know where are you going to be on a circuit before you've gone there.

DON'T MISS

"A lot of it is about learning, but we're not really going to make any predictions about where we're going to perform. We just need to go there on Friday, see what kind of issues we have and see if we can solve those with setup."

Hamilton currently sits sixth in the Drivers' Championship, 27 points behind team-mate George Russell. The British compatriots are also close in the head-to-head battles this year on Sunday.

Russell has beaten Hamilton on 10 occasions while the 37-year-old has finished ahead of his team-mate eight times. Hamilton has proven the most consistent in qualifying though, finishing fastest of the two in 11 of the 18 races so far.
