The Dutch F2 sprint race was red-flagged after a horror crash on the opening lap saw one car land on top of another. Campos team-mates Ralph Boschung and Kush Maini collided and slammed into the barriers at Turn 3 due to poor visibility. The weather wreaked havoc to all sessions on Saturday and made the Zandvoort track very dangerous.

Hitech star Jak Crawford made contact with Maini's car and pushed him into Boschung, who was saved from a serious injury by the Halo system as Maini's car landed on top of his head. All three drivers involved in the incident appeared unharmed.

Motorsport fans took to social media to express their concerns over the drivers being allowed to race in the difficult conditions, with standing water on track and visibility low.

"FIA shouldn't let F2 drivers to drive in these conditions. Nobody learn from situation on Spa in FRECA. Good thing is nobody is harmed after big crash," one supporter tweeted.

Meanwhile, others praised the Halo system, which only became mandatory in 2018.

"Halo showing why its needed again after that crash hope driver's are both ok #F2 #DutchGP," one twitter user wroter. Another added: "Jeeesus that was a nasty crash in the F2 race. Hope both drivers are okay. Never want to see one car on top of the other like that... thank god for the halo! #dutchGP."

After a lengthy delay, racing resumed for four laps but the sprint was then abandoned due to the bad weather conditions. The incident occurred at the same corner in which Daniel Ricciardo broke his wrist on Friday, which rules him out of the F1 Grand Prix.

Christian Horner has suggested that Ricciardo may also sit out of next weekend's Italian Grand Prix to have surgery. He told Sky Sports: “That's the thing he was most frustrated about, talking with him last night. He's just taken a bunch of time off, just getting his mojo back, getting back into it and now he's on the bench again. That was, I think, his frustration. I think he felt that the car, they've started to make some progress and it's a shame for him.

“But I'm sure, at the back of his mind, he's probably got Singapore as a target. But then again, Singapore is probably one of the most tough circuits on the calendar. But nature will take its course.”

Ricciardo said: "I remember coming into Turn 3. I had already gotten into the corner and then saw Piastri, so it was either hit him or the wall. When I hit the wall, I didn’t have enough time to take my hands off the steering wheel, so the wheel came and hit my hand. It’s really unfortunate and frustrating, but I’ll try to recover as quickly as I can."
