United supremo Woodward turned to Sir Alex as he prepared to sack Mourinho following the 3-1 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool.
After getting three managerial appointments wrong on the bounce, The Sun claim Fergie was consulted by the executive vice-chairman.
Woodward did not consult the legendary manager when replacing Louis van Gaal with Mourinho back in May 2016.
But a United source told The Sun: “Once Woodward had talked to the Glazers and told them he wanted Jose out, he needed to be certain he could get the right kind of figure in for the short term at least.

“That’s where Fergie came in and he helped make sure the whole thing happened with Solskjaer and Phelan.”
Meanwhile, legendary United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has made his case to become director of football at Old Trafford.
He told the BBC: “I’m thinking about putting my name in there. Like every other footballer, I want to be involved again.
“I have this energy, I have education but I’ve not seen anything that’s really interesting to make the big change and then I see this big idea about director of football at Man United.
