The former England boss’ name had been put forward at a Scottish Football Association board meeting earlier this week.

The veteran Swede admitted it was news to him as he hadn’t applied or asked anyone to put his name into the mix to succeed Alex McLeish, who stepped down earlier this month.

Eriksson, speaking exclusively to Express Sport, said: “I am in China just now and these stories linking me with the Scotland job have come out of the blue.

“I have no idea where these stories have come from because I haven’t spoken to or discussed the Scotland job with anyone.

“I have also had no contact with the SFA. I have not applied for the job and there is nobody who represents me that has put my name forward.

“There are lots of agents in football who like to throw manager’s names about if they are not in a job but I can assure you that if anyone has put my name forward then it has been done without me knowing.”

The 71-year-old has been out of football since he stepped down as the Philippines national coach after leading them to the Asian Cup finals earlier this year.

Eriksson has managed England, Ivory Coast and Mexico, as well as holding down a number of top club jobs at Roma, Leicester City, Manchester City, Sampdoria and Benfica.

Eriksson took England to three straight quarter-final appearances, and came under criticism for failing to get past the last eight stage.

Scotland’s last appearance at a major tournament came in 1998, as they were knocked out of the group stages of the France World Cup.
