World Cup news: Lionel Messi inspires Argentina in crucial Mexico win to keep dream alive

Lionel Messi's Argentina and reigning champions France were in World Cup action on Saturday

England fans react to Harry Kane miss

Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski and others were in action on Saturday as part of a star-studded line-up as the second round of 2022 World Cup group-stage fixtures continued. Argentina faced Mexico in Group C and France battled Denmark in Group D among the four games on offer throughout another exciting day of football in Qatar.

Argentina managed to avoid being dumped out of the World Cup following a 2-0 win over Mexico, with that man Lionel Messi scoring a beautiful opener to get them on their way. Meanwhile, France saw off Denmark 2-1 to become the first team to confirm their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

And there were also wins for Australia and Poland as both sides kept their dreams of glory alive.

Saturday's World Cup results...

Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia (ITV)

France 2-1 Denmark (ITV)

That's your lot

It was another wonderful day of football, with plenty of twists and turns as ever.

The good news? We get to do it all again tomorrow, with Spain vs Germany the standout fixture in another mouthwatering schedule.

See you then!

Full time: Argentina 2-0 Mexico

Argentina aren't going home tonight after all.

It wasn't pretty at times, but Lionel Messi and co got the job done to leave them a Poland win away from qualification for the knockout stages.

The picture doesn't look so pretty for Mexico, though. Anything other than victory vs Saudi Arabia next week and they will crash out.

Goal! Argentina 2-0 Mexico

That should get the job done!

A short corner is fed to Messi, he finds Enzo Fernandez, who bends a wicked shot past the despairing dive of Ochoa.

That will seal a vitally important three points for Argentina, as La Celeste roar back in this tournament.

Messi comes up trumps

It's been a pretty dismal game, but that Messi strike shows just how he can make all the difference when it's needed most.

There are 10 minutes to go, and the only voices you can hear in the stands are Argentinean ones.

Can Mexico ruin their party?

Goal! Argentina 1-0 Mexico

Just when they needed him most!

Cometh the hour, cometh the man, as Messi pops up from nowhere to strike a long-range screamer into the back of the net.

How crucial could that goal prove to be??

The tension is growing

You can feel the tension growing around the stadium, with both sets of fans getting frustrated at the lack of offensive talent on show.

A draw is not great for either side, and surely both will have to push for a winner at some point.

With just 25 minutes of normal time left, a change in approach may come soon.

Messi free-kick wasted

Messi wins a free-kick in a dangerous area just outside the D.

How many times have we seen him curl a beauty in from that range?

This time... it's not to be as he blazes it over.

Sums up the match, and Argentina's World Cup, so far.

PEEP

We are back underway.

It's got to get better in the second half, surely?

Ugly scenes in stands

Argentina and Mexico supporters have been caught up in scuffles around the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar.

The fans have already come to blows prior to the match getting underway in the run up.

And tempers boiled over in the stands between the sets of supporters once again, after ugly scenes breaking out on the streets of Qatar in midweek. Images showed those seated near one another were letting emotions get the better of them as they came to blows.

Half-time: Argentina 0-0 Mexico

There goes the half-time whistle.

It's not been great. Plenty of huff and puff, but a huge lack of quality from both sides.

They'll need something better in the second-half, or both will be left in a perilous position going into next week's final group stage games.

Mexico free-kick saved

Mexico get a free-kick in a good position, but Argentina goalkeeper Martinez is up to the challenge and catches Vega's effort.

5 minutes of injury time signalled. It's tense, nerve-wracking... but not very high on quality

Argentina look scared

There is still just absolutely no quality from Argentina.

The occasion looks to be getting to them at the moment, with nobody standing up and taking charge of the match.

They desperately need some quality and leadership.

Mexico dominating

It is Mexico who have started the strongest here.

A wicked free-kick evades everyone and goes out for a goal-kick, but any sort of touch could have seen them take the lead.

Messi and co anonymous in this first ten minutes.

PEEP

Here we go then.

Mexico, in their green and white kit, get us underway. This could be an absolute thriller, and the atmosphere is arguably the best of the tournament so far.

Here's hoping it lives up to the hype.

Out come the players

The two sets of teams walk out to a raptuous reception at this magnificent stadium.

Two deafening national anthems will be blasted out very shortly.

Bring. It. On.

20 minutes until kick-off

There is a fantastic atmosphere inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium, with these two sets of fans more than capable of making plenty of noise.

What an encounter this should be. Can Lionel Messi sprinkle a bit of magic over the occasion? Or will he be left facing a humilating early exit from his last-ever World Cup?

20 minutes until we get underway.

Lionel Messi

Argentina on the brink

The equation is simple for Argentina tonight. If they lose, they are OUT of the World Cup, and will return to South America in disgrace following big pre-tournament hopes.

Manager Lionel Scaloni has made a total of FIVE changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia earlier this week, and he will desperately hoping for a better showing from his side. Here are the teams in full:

ARGENTINA XI: Martínez; Montiel, Otamendi, Lisandro Martínez, Acuña; De Paul, Rodríguez, Mac Allister; Messi; Di Maria, Lautaro Martínez.

MEXICO XI: Ochoa; K.Álvarez, Araújo, Moreno, Montes, Gallardo; Guardado, Herrera, Chávez; Lozano, Vega.

Full time: France 2-1 Denmark

That's that! France have qualified for the knockout stages, thanks to their star man Mbappe, who was brilliant in the second half and scored a wonderful brace.

Denmark will have an uphill battle to go through now, and know anything less than a win against Australia next week will see them crash out.

An entertaining game in the end. Now on to the mouthwatering Argentina vs Mexico...

Goal! France 2-1 Denmark

Guess who it is again?

Griezmann swings in a wonderful cross, and Mbappe is there after some wonderful moment to bundle it home at the back post.

That's three goals so far in this tournament for Mbappe, and France are five minutes away from another three points.

Goal! France 1-1 Denmark

Suddenly it's all going off!

Denmark are back in it, with Christensen heading level from a corner with as simple a goal as you'll see.

That sets up a tantalising last 20 minutes.

Goal! France 1-0 Denmark

The French have the lead, and it's that man Kylian Mbappe!

Hernandez charges down the left flank and squares it back to the PSG man, who makes no mistake to poke the ball past Schmeichel.

Finally we have lift-off!

Subdued crowd

There really still isn't much to get excited about here.

The crowd are noticeably quiet, with both sides continuing to cancel each other out.

55 minutes on the clock.

Back underway

Denmark have made one change, with Braithwaite on for Cornelius.

Will we get some more goalmouth action in this second period?

Here's hoping.

Half-time: France 0-0 Denmark

France have shaded it, but it remains 0-0 at half-time.

Not a huge amount of clear cut chances, but Mbappe and Dembele have looked particularly dangerous for the French when they've accelerated at full pace.

Hopefully some goals to come in the second-half.

Unusual press box etiquette

Rather unorthodox scenes in the press box here as French journalists act like cheerleaders.

Not something you see very often. They're shouting and making quite a noise, especially when Kylian Mbappe or Ousmane Dembele touch the ball...

Still 0-0

We're still all square, with a resilient Denmark doing well to restrain France's dangerous front-line.

Indeed, the Scandinavians themselves have looked promising at times on the counter-attack, and this one could still go either way.

Five minutes until half-time.

Denmark

Mbappe shining

Kylian Mbappe is absolutely electric. He appeared to have the run on Andreas Christensen prior to being brought down by the Barcelona star, who is shown a yellow card.

A let-off for Denmark, who have defended diligently to this point.

Cagey opening

Nothing much to shout about at the moment, which will suit Denmark.

In fact, perhaps the only interesting thing of note has been seeing a Mexican wave in just the second minute of the match.

Better football to come, hopefully.

PEEP

We are underway in France vs Denmark.

Should an interesting one, this. Can the Danes pull off a shock, or will the World Cup holders march on to confirm their place in the knockout stage?

Keep your eyes peeled for updates.

Souness not convinced by France

Liverpool icon Graeme Souness has dismissed France's chances of retaining their World Cup trophy ahead of their group stage clash with Denmark, despite Les Bleus' impressive opening game win over Australia. The ITV pundit has insisted that Gareth Southgate would not be "frightened" of the current crop of French players, aside from Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe.

“They [Denmark] are going into the game full of confidence, they have beaten them twice in the last six months," Souness told ITV. "There will be no inferiority complex, they will fancy themselves.

"I know they are the current world champions but when I look at them on paper, I know you can look at teams on paper and think they are going to win every game they play, but I look at that French team and if I was Gareth Southgate I am not frightened of that French team."

Next it's France

The World Cup holders are back in action next, with France taking on Christian Eriksen's Denmark.

It's another cracker in store. The fun just never stops, eh?

FULL-TIME: Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia

That was one of the games of the tournament so far.

Poland pick up a huge three points through Zielinski's first-half strike and Robert Lewandowski's first-ever World Cup goal.

Saudi Arabia have been excellent this winter. They will face Mexico with plenty of confidence next week.

Group C is shaping up very nicely...

GOAL! Poland 2-0 Saudi Arabia

Robert Lewandowski gets his first World Cup goal!!!

The veteran striker is in tears after bolstering his legacy.

Horrid mistake by Al Malki as the Saudi centre-back miscontrols the ball, letting it run through to Lewandowski, who was never going to miss.

WOODWORK... AGAIN!

And it's Poland again!

Saudi Arabia are riding their luck as they search for the all-important equaliser.

This time it's Robert Lewandowski who clips an effort onto the post.

WOODWORK!

Poland have survived a barrage of Saudi Arabia pressure and nearly go down the other end to seal the win.

Milk cannons a header off the bar. The final 30 minutes are set up beautifully.

SECOND HALF!

The second half begins...

Let's look at that Szczesny brilliance again...

It'd be rude not to...

Simply sensational.

HALF-TIME: Poland 1-0 Saudi Arabia

An exhilarating half ends in drama as Wojciech Szczesny produces an incredible double penalty save to deny Saudi Arabia an equaliser.

Piotr Zielinski's goal against the run of play is the difference.

PENALTY... SAVED!

Wojciech Szczesny produces an incredible double save to deny Saudi Arabia's Salem Al-Dawsari from the penalty spot!

10 minutes have been added onto the first half.

PENALTY!!!

Saudi Arabia have a penalty in the 45th minute after a VAR check!

GOAL! Poland 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Against the run of play... Poland lead on the brink of half-time!

Robert Lewandowski cuts the ball back for Piotr Zielinski, who is unmarked and blazes an effort into the net.

Very harsh on Saudi Arabia. But they've down at half-time once already at the World Cup...

Poland 0-0 Saudi Arabia

It's been a heated affair so far and Saudi Arabia, like against Argentina, are really bringing the game to Poland.

And it's showing. Three Polish players have received yellow cards as they struggle to deal with the Saudis' energy.

Two Saudi Arabia names have been booked, including manager Herve Renard...

KICK-OFF: Poland 0-0 Saudi Arabia

And we're off!

Poland vs Saudi Arabia - The XIs

Poland and Saudi Arabia will clash in Group C with plenty still on the line.

Here are the line-ups...

Poland XI: Szczeny; Bereszynski, Glik, Kiwor; Cash, Bielik, Krychowiak, Frankowski; Zielinski; Milik, Lewandowski.

Saudi Arabia XI: Al-Owais; Abdulhamid, Al-Amri, Al-Boleahi, Al-Burayk; Al Malki; Buraikan, Al-Najhei, Kanno, Al-Dawsari; Al-Shehri.

Next up...

Poland vs Saudi Arabia is next on the agenda...

After their shock win against Argentina, the Saudis will seal progression into the knockout rounds with another triumph!

FULL-TIME! Tunisia 0-1 Australia

Australia win!

Mitchell Duke's first-half header is enough to lift the Aussies up to second in Group D, with Denmark set to play France later.

It's Australia's first World Cup win since 2010, and a first World Cup clean sheet since 1974.

A momentous win for Australia.

Tunisia 0-1 Australia

SIX minutes of stoppage time...

Tunisia 0-1 Australia

The second half has been void of quality, with Australia comfortably holding onto their 1-0 lead as of the 75th minute.

SECOND HALF: Tunisia 0-1 Australia

We're back underway!

HALF-TIME: Tunisia 0-1 Australia

Australia have the advantage at the break through Mitchell Duke's clever header.

Plenty of work to do for Tunisia!

GOAL! Tunisia 0-1 Australia

Mitchell Duke opens the scoring with a great header!

KICK-OFF: Tunisia 0-0 Australia

And we're off at the Al Janoub Stadium!

Let's get this party started

Are you sitting comfortably?

Australia and Tunisia are out onto the pitch. We're about to get underway in our first match of the day.

Warm gestures from the locals

Qatari locals living around the Al Thumama Stadium took time to hand out free meals to supporters who had been at the hosts' game against Senegal on Friday.

Senegal ran out 3-1 winners, dumping Qatar out of their own World Cup, but locals showed their class after full-time to make sure those present felt welcome.

Great to see!

Australia vs Tunisia - The XIs

The first game of the day is fast approaching, with Australia taking on Tunisia in Group D at 10am.

Here are the line-ups...

Australia XI: Ryan; Behich, Rowles, Souttar, Karacic; Irvine, McGree, Mooy; Leckie, Duke, Goodwin.

Tunisia XI: Dahmen; Talbi, Meriah, Bronn; Abdi, Laidouni, Skhiri, Drager; Sliti, Jebali, Msakni.

England fans forced to 'strip naked' by Qatari police

Two England fans were allegedly forced to 'strip naked' after being denied entry into a World Cup stadium for wearing crusader outfits.

The attire is considered offensive in Qatar and FIFA has claimed the duo were removed from the Khalifa International Stadium for being disrespectful to Muslims.

However, one of the supporters has shared his side of events, including being subjected to 'ritual humiliation', and it makes chilling reading.

Beckham weighs in on 'football vs soccer'

David Beckham has sided with England fans over the ongoing 'football vs soccer' debate, which was rife during Friday's draw.

USA fans were heard chanting, 'it's called soccer' throughout the clash, despite the sport widely being recognised as football around the world.

And Beckham, in Qatar as an ambassador, has argued 'it's called FOOTBALL' in response...

He posted on Facebook: "It's called FOOTBALL US Soccer. Great atmosphere at Al Bayt Stadium between US fans and England fans tonight."

Van Dijk hits back at Dutch icon

Virgil van Dijk has fired back at Netherlands icon Marco van Basten after criticism over his role in Friday's 1-1 draw against Ecuador.

Van Basten slammed Van Dijk for failing to prevent Enner Valencia's equaliser and questioned his leadership skills.

However, the Liverpool star has bitten back, accusing him of always producing negative views...

He responded: "I don't think he is ever positive, so what am I supposed to do with it? It's easy to talk from the studio. Me failing as a captain? What do you want me to do with that info? I am always upfront. I lead the team the best way possible."

Giroud on the brink of history

France's Olivier Giroud is on the brink of history after his brace in Tuesday's 4-1 win against Australia.

If he earns his 116th France cap and scores against Denmark this evening, he will surpass Thierry Henry as the country's all-time leading goalscorer.

He currently has netted 51 times for Les Bleus, and has emerged as an early frontrunner for the Golden Boot.

There's a trend with today's front pages...

The Mirror and The Sun have funnily gone for the same witty headline on their front pages today... and they aren't the only ones.

'Yawn in the USA' is plastered on several UK newspapers this morning after last night's bore draw between England and the USA.

Both sides looked happy with a point by the end of proceedings, and in honesty, it's a positive result for England.

The Three Lions simply need to beat Wales to secure top spot, or avoid a 4-0 defeat to progress.

Roy Keane: England were 'terrible'

Roy Keane was just as unimpressed about the display and result at the Al Bayt Stadium.

The Irishman labelled England 'terrible' and joined Neville in admitting his confusion about why Phil Foden didn't come off the bench.

He told ITV: "We were surprised watching [that Foden did not come on].

"Gareth will have his reasons, he is the manager, he knows the players better than anybody, but we were all watching the game thinking Foden, and you would fully expect Foden to come on with the options.

"And the subs that did come on did not really have an impact. I know they did well the other day, but England did look leggy and one-paced, short of ideas.

"Even set pieces, you never felt they had a goal in their locker from that. So a terrible performance."

Gary Neville 'disappointed' by USA draw

England failed to impress on Friday as they drew 0-0 against the USA at the World Cup.

After full-time, Gary Neville labelled the performance 'poor' and expressed his disappointment that England couldn't secure progression from Group B at the first time of asking.

He told ITV: "It was poor. We're all disappointed as we wanted a lot more from England. The clean sheet is a positive, and Harry Maguire headed a lot of balls away in the second half.

"Sometimes, our midfield just didn't click tonight. We looked tired at times and I didn't think we connected in midfield combinations. Their midfield was far better. I was disappointed not to see Foden."

Qatar security defy FIFA

Part of the controversy surrounding Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup is the country's attitude and laws about homosexuality.

And there have been reports at the start of the tournament of fans and reporters being denied entry into stadiums due to donning rainbow colours in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.

Earlier this week, FIFA confirmed that rainbow flags will no longer be prohibited at World Cup games and assured fans that Qatari officials had assured them that they accept the stance.

However, BBC sports correspondent Natalie Pirks has tweeted, claiming that a member of camera staff was turned away because they were wearing a rainbow watch...
