Comparing Man City's treble winners to Man Utd's class of 1999
Manchester United could end up paying around £25million more for Mason Mount than his market value after Chelsea remained firm on the playmaker’s asking price. Mount appears likely to switch Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford this summer, but doing so could come at a premium price.

Chelsea are supposedly insisting on a price tag between the region of £70-80m. That is despite Mount having just a year remaining on his contract.
Talks over a new contract at Chelsea have stalled in recent months, leaving the Blues hoping to receive a fee for the 24-year-old this summer rather than losing him for free in a year’s time. It has been reported that Mount’s preferred destination is Man Utd.
Chelsea could ultimately end up as the real winners in the deal, though, despite losing a talented academy graduate who has shone in their first-team in recent campaigns. According to data, their valuation of Mount is around £25m higher than his actual market value.

Figures produced by the CIES Football Observatory say that Mount’s more accurate value should be around £55.86m. If United are forced to pay £80m for the England star, then they have overspent by just under £25m.
The data shows that Mount suffered a drastic dip in value due to an underwhelming year at Chelsea, with a loss of form and injury preventing him from helping the club move back up the Premier League table. In June 2022, Mount’s value was £86.19m.
According to Sky Sports, the Red Devils are keen to negotiate down Chelsea’s price tag. The report adds that a bid is to be expected in the next few days, but it might not meet what the Blues want for the attacking midfielder.
Mount is one of several targets United are eyeing this summer. He is their preferred choice for the central midfield position that Erik ten Hag is desperate to strengthen.

United struggled with fitness and a lack of depth in midfield last season, with suspensions to Casemiro and injuries to Christian Eriksen exposing their issues. The likes of Scott McTominay and Fred have been linked with departures to accommodate new arrivals.
The Old Trafford hierarchy have supposedly beaten competition from Liverpool and Arsenal for Mount’s signature. All they need to do is agree a fee for one of the Premier League’s most high-profile moves of the year.
United, who remain under a takeover process, will also target at least one striker to relax the scoring burden from Marcus Rashford. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund have both been linked with a switch.
