Pennant has a reputation as a troublemaker and has been jailed for drink driving
Pennant was on his way out of Stoke under previous manager Tony Pulis with his contract up and no new one on offer. But when Hughes succeeded Pulis, one of the first things he did was sit down with Pennant and offer him a new deal. Pennant was a substitute in Hughes’ first game last weekend and could start against Crystal Palace today.
“We’ve given an opportunity to Jermaine,” said Hughes. “He loves the club. He didn’t want to leave in the first place. He wants to be part of what we are doing.
“He has always had ability, maybe on occasions things away from football have held him back.”

Pennant has a reputation as a troublemaker and has been jailed for drink driving. There were also stories of him drinking while away with Stoke last season. “I’ve not seen a rebel or a troublemaker in him,” said Hughes.
“And I just didn’t like the idea of him rocking up one Saturday afternoon at the Britannia in opposition colours. That didn’t sit comfortably with me.”
