Many fans were annoyed that United lost out to Portugal youngster Sanches to Bayern Munich, particularly with the ex-Benfica midfielder then helping his country pip France to Euro 2016 glory.
However, according to The Independent, United snubbed the opportunity to sign Sanches with Jose Mourinho hellbent on bringing Pogba back to the Premier League.
The Frenchman could cost a staggering £100million, which would surpass the £86m Real Madrid paid to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham three years ago.
It would also be a signal of Mourinho's intent, with the Portuguese boss reportedly eager to land a marquee name to kick off his era with a bang.

He has already completed the signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly ahead of the new season.
Mourinho reportedly wants his transfer business conducted early this year in order to avoid a repeat of last-gasp deals surrounding Anthony Martial, Radamel Falcao and Daley Blind in recent years.
