The 25-year-old then went on to help France to the Euro 2016 final - winning the golden boot with six goals and was named the tournament's best player.
Simeone has dragged Atletico up to the standard of Barcelona and Real Madrid in his five years at the Vicente Calderon.
Atletico won La Liga in 2014 and have been Champions League runners-up twice - in 2014 and earlier this year - on both occasions losing to rivals Real.
But 46-year-old Simeone may leave this summer, according to Spanish publication El Confidencial.

Griezmann fires Euro 2016 hosts France into quarter-finals
Zidane, Simeone reflect on Champions League final
The report suggests he would have walked away this summer had he won the Champions League this time around, but he decided to stay to fight for it again.
However it is believed the strain on the relationship between Simeone and the board has reached a point where he may leave this coming summer.
Inter Milan or a move to the Premier League are the big options with Simeone and his staff stepping up their English lessons
Arsenal's current situation with Arsene Wenger's contract would be of interest, while Simeone has been linked with Chelsea in the past.

Antoine Griezmann stayed at Atletico this summer after a conversation with Simeone
And Griezmann's future, too, may be called into question if Simeone does leave.
Last week it was reported that Manchester United were preparing a move for Griezmann next summer as they look to replace Wayne Rooney.
Chelsea were also in the market for a striker and will continue to be with Diego Costa's long-term future in the balance.
And if Simeone made the move to the Premier League Griezmann may be tempted to follow him wherever he goes.
