Leeds United news: Whites team better than Manchester City side - Stan Collymore

LEEDS UNITED were better in the 1970s than Manchester City are now.

That’s the verdict of former Liverpool and England star Stan Collymore, who’s dismissed Guillem Balague’s claim that Pep Guardiola’s team are the best to have ever plied their trade in England.

City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to a mammoth 11 points by beating local rivals Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford yesterday.

And that win was their 14th on the spin - a record run of victories during one season in the top flight.

City have earned plenty of plaudits for their play this term and have already been credited as champions-in-waiting by many.

And Balague even said: "Never mind the records. Or if City will or won't be beaten. It is not too early to say I doubt better football has been seen in England."

Collymore reckons the Sky Sports reporter is wrong to make such a claim though.

"Haha, good one!" he said on Twitter.

"Liverpool's European teams, United 99, watch Forest’s 2 European Cup winning teams and how they played, Arsenal Invicibles, Leeds United '70s.

"Give your head a wobble, and have a little respect."

Collymore added: "Spurs '60s, Everton mid '80s and Bill Nicholson’s Spurs" to his list of teams better than the current City side too.

Collymore then praised Leeds in more detail before slamming Balague further, saying: "One of English football's greatest teams.

"Could out-play teams, out fight teams (not applicable in the virtual non-contact game of today), and out-think teams.

"Biggest disrespect is basically telling people who watched those teams with their own eyes, backed up by year after year of dominance in many cases, that they can't trust what they saw!

"Pure revisionist cobblers!"
