Warriors make a Bird call

WIGAN have made a bold move for Cronulla Sharks’ troubled stand-off Greg Bird in a player-plus-cash offer which would see the Warriors’ Australian threequarter Cameron Phelps going in the opposite direction.

Bird, 24, has been negotiating a release from the remaining four years of his contract with the cash-strapped Sharks after being stood down by the club in August following an alleged assault on his girlfriend.

He would replace Trent Barrett, who has joined Cronulla after two successful seasons at the JJB Stadium.

Wigan have also agreed terms with Sydney Roosters’ winger Amos Roberts, but the deal is not yet sealed.

Salford will open next May’s Magic Weekend in Edinburgh with a clash against Harlequins as the Super League’s successful roadshow decamps to the Scottish capital after two years in Cardiff.

The Reds, back in the top flight after winning one of the new three-year franchises, meet Quins in the first of three games at Murrayfield on May 2, followed by Wakefield v Bradford and the Wigan-St Helens derby.

The other four matches will take place the following day, beginning with Huddersfield v Celtic Crusaders.

Hull then take on Castleford, champions Leeds will be third on against Catalans, while Warrington v Hull KR closes the show.
