Mirra Andreeva’s fairytale Wimbledon debut came to an end at the hands of 25th seed Madison Keys. The 16-year-old led by a set and a break before dropping the second, throwing her racket in frustration and going on to lose 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 - snubbing a handshake with the umpire after being given a second code violation in the final game. Andreeva had come through qualifying to reach the second week of Wimbledon in just her second Grand Slam main draw appearance.

Andreeva stormed into the second week with statement wins over the No 10 and No 22 seeds in what is her first-ever tournament on grass and the third pro event of her career. But she had a tough test in Keys, who came to SW19 after lifting her seventh title in Eastbourne.

The American got off to a fast start and broke to lead 2-0 but the teenage sensation showed the skill that got her into the fourth round and managed to break twice to turn the tide and take the lead. Andreeva kept on rolling, firing down winners to break for a third time and take the first set 6-3 after just over half an hour.

Andreeva looked as though she had spent years playing on the grass as she carried her dominance into set number two and immediately broke the world No 18. Keys was in more trouble as she faced more break points in her next two service games but she held off the Russian to trail 2-4.

The American stepped it up to break back after hitting a drop shot winner with her non-dominant left hand. Keys took the set to a tiebreak and stormed through to take it 7-6(4) and draw level. Andreeva wasn't happy after blowing her lead to be dragged to a third, chucking her racket in frustration and receiving a code violation.

After blowing two break points in the first game of the third set, Andreeva found herself broken by the 28-year-old. And she couldn't take advantage of a break-back point at 2-4 down, heading for the changeover a game away from crashing out. From 40-15 up on her own serve, the 16-year-old found herself dragged to deuce and was given a second code violation for appearing to throw her racket again but argued that she slipped.

As her second violation, she was docked a point penalty and it gave Keys a match point. Andreeva thought she saved it but the American correctly challenged her serve as being out and closed out the victory as the Russian refused to shake the umpire's hand at the conclusion of the match.

Andreeva was bidding to become the youngest woman to reach the quarter-final stage of Wimbledon since Anna Kournikova back in 1997 - 26 years ago. She was also seeking her fifth top-25 win across just three professional tournaments, previously beating Beatriz Haddad Maia and Magda Linette in Madrid, and Barbora Krejcikova and Anastasia Potapova at SW19.

Keys will now face either world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka or Ekaterina Alexandrova, who face off later on Monday. She has matched her best-ever Wimbledon run, previously reaching the quarter-final once in 2015.
